Theatre on Ice Nationals
What is Nationals?
The National Theatre on Ice Competition is the premier annual week-long event for TOI teams in the United States. Sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating, this competition brings together teams from across the country to showcase their talents and compete for national titles.
How is Nationals structured?
The competition features two main program segments:
- Choreographic Exercise (CE): A more structured program focusing on specific choreographic elements, performed without props or elaborate costumes, emphasizing movement and expression .
- Free Skate: A program that allows teams to creatively interpret a theme or story using costumes and props.
All teams in a level compete their CE program first based on a randomly assigned order. The start order for the Free Skate programs is determined by placement after the CE program.
Judging and Criteria
The Component Judging System (CJS) is used at the National Theatre on Ice competition. The CJS uses five marks to evaluate each program. Each mark is evaluated on a scaled of 0-10 outlined below:
10 | Exceptional |
9 | Superior |
8 | Very Good |
7 | Good |
6 | Above Average |
5 | Average |
4 | Fair |
3 | Weak |
2 | Low-Level |
1 | Poor |
0 | Not-Skated |
The results of the Choreographic Exercise and the Free Skate are weighted equally. For each level, the final result is a combination of the Choreographic Exercise and the Free Skate.
