What is USFS Testing?

Figure Skating Tests

Welcome to Virginia Ice Theatre! One of the most common questions new families have is about “test levels.” Here’s what you need to know:

What Are Tests?

In U.S. Figure Skating, every athlete progresses through a series of official “tests” that measure skating ability.

For Virginia Ice Theatre team members, the most important first step is passing the Pre-Preliminary Skating Skills Test. This test shows that a skater has a solid foundation of edges, turns, and control — the basics needed to compete with the team.

(There are other testing options, such as a pattern dance test, but those are less common for new team members.)

Tests can be taken either in person at a test session or virtually by submitting a video.

The Pre-Preliminary Skating Skills test consists of four “moves,” or patterns a skater will follow on the ice.

How to Get Ready

The best path to success is working one-on-one with a private coach, who can guide you through the required skills and let you know when you’re ready to test. Independent practice is just as important — plan to spend time outside of team rehearsals building confidence with the skills you’ll need. We recommend that all new team members aim to pass their test by January so they are fully eligible to compete.

Got Questions?

The Skating Club of Northern Virginia, VIT’s parent club, offers in-person and virtual test sessions. You can find out more by visiting https://scnv.org/testing/
